The second workshop in the 2008-09 Lessons from the Field: Autism
Series focused on early identification and intervention for
children with autism spectrum disorders. The lead presenter was
Dr. Wendy Stone, who is nationally renowned in the field of early
identification and intervention. Dr. Stone is a Professor of
Pediatrics and Psychology and Human Development, Director of the
Kennedy Center Treatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders (TRIAD), and Director of the Marino Autism Research Institute - Vanderbilt. Her work on the developmental aspects of autism has included the study of early behavioral features of autism, the stability of diagnostic characteristics in early childhood, and the contributions of early imitation, play, and prelinguistic communication to later cognitive and behavioral outcomes. This workshop also featured University faculty and community professionals with expertise in the field of autism.

GOAL:
To provide human services and health care professionals, social workers, educators and parents with an understanding of current research relevant to the early identification and intervention of autism spectrum disorders and its application in addressing the needs of children and families experiencing autism.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Understand current research related to early identification of autism and its implications for practice
  • Gain knowledge of evidence-based screening and assessment tools for identifying autism spectrum disorders in young children
  • Understand how the unique behavioral features and learning styles of
    young children with autism have implications for early intervention
    strategies and approaches
  • Gain knowledge of evidence-based intervention strategies and resources
    available for young children with autism and their families

CEU's:
Application for 3 CEU's per workshop was made to MN DHS Child
Protection and the Boards of Social Work, Psychology, Marriage &
Family Therapists, and Certified Family Life Educators. Certificates
of Attendance were available upon completion of each workshop. The Certificate of Attendance can also be used for nursing and teaching CEU's, which do not require pre-approval.
